How Designers Use Design Principles: Design Behaviors and Application Modes

چکیده
This paper investigates how information systems design professionals use principles (extracted from a prior science research project) in new situation. We do this by capturing think-aloud protocols experienced who are given access to potentially useful principles. Our analysis identifies two dimensions of use: behaviors (what designers do) and application modes (how apply the principles). Mapping across suggests pathways: forward chaining backward chaining. study shows empirically studying expert can shed light on microprocesses use, an empirical turn investigation contribute clarifying fundamental nature conclude highlighting implications these insights for crafting more

How Expert Designers Design
In both business training and higher professional education there is a clear shift towards competencybased learning to cope with fast technological and societal changes. Competencies can be construed as abilities that enable learners to recognize and define new problems in their domain of study and future work as well as solve these problems (Kirschner, van Vilsteren, Hummel, & Wigman, 1997). A...
متن کاملArchitecture Design Utilizing Precedents The Study of How Iranian Professional Architects Use Design Precedents
Designers usually use precedents in their designs. They may use them through different stages of the design process and to different ends. As this use is important, the study of its positive and negative aspects has encouraged numerous studies to find out about the correct way of using them. In this paper, the use of design precedents is studied by interviewing professional architects and the r...
متن کاملDesign Principles for Application Integration
Application integration is a major trend in information technology today. In this paper we present a number of principles for the design, validation and presentation of process models which align the applications of an organisation to its business processes. The design principles are divided into two groups. The first group consists of guidelines that obtain different views of the models and th...
متن کاملThe Situationist Urban Design; Rules and Principles
From a general perspective, urbanism can be assumed as a bipolar world. On one hand, large-scale plans formulated by official organizations are shaping urban environment and the entirety of our cities; on the other hand, social activists and artists, active in the field of cities, are making an effort to give it a human character. According to De Certo (1984), the first approach to city, adopte...
متن کاملTowards a model of how designers mentally categorise design information
This study aims to explore how designers mentally categorise design information during the early sketching performed in the generative phase. An action research approach is particularly appropriate for identifying the various sorts of design information and the cognitive operations involved in this phase. Thus, we conducted a protocol study with eight product designers based on a descriptive mo...
